599.5 miles hiked from Mexico
At the all-you-can-eat breakfast in the morning I can only finish one plate of food. This is totally unsatisfactory. Well hell, I think. What has this zero done to me. Time to get back on the trail.
We hike out of Ghost Ranch at 9 and have a lazy day of meandering out of the sandstone canyons and back into the green mountain meadows with their aspens just leafing out and the yellow dandelions everywhere. We’re taking it easy this section, these 90ish miles to Chama- some of the gear we ordered doesn’t arrive until the 5th and that will give the snow extra time to melt besides. This section is for resting and fattening up. We take breaks in the sunshine among the flowers, we get lost on logging roads, we stop to camp at a burbling brook and eat our dinners while the sky does wild things. Soon will be the ultimate challenge- our expedition into the snow-socked San Juans. Will we run out of whiskey and hardtack? Will our dog team fall through the ice? Will we make it through and then celebrate by sitting in a dark room, getting high and watching all the Fast and the Furious movies, in backwards order? Stay tuned to find out.
