Section two of the #MogollonRimTrail kicked our butts in so many ways. Francis' asylum appeal fundraiser only needs $110 more (to reach $1,400), and the next blog post will go up! Link in profile. Here's @muffyjdavis in Clear Creek Canyon on day 9, fighting her way through flood debris. This day was painful, slow, and glorious. Thanks to everyone who has helped with the asylum fundraisers so far! 😀✨✨✨
"The trail today is slabs of angled redrock in a forest of junipers, cairns linking short stretches of tread. The trail is the way the chapparal parts, the way the pine needles are lighter in some places on the ground. The trail zigs and zags. The trail is a set of cow prints in the hardened mud. The trail is rocks. Fist sized, bread loaf, toaster oven, microwave. What else can rocks be? Vitamix, cast iron skillet, mixing bowl. Old pair of running shoes, bathroom wastebasket, 10lb bag of dog food." ✨Day 6 from the #MogollonRimTrail is up on my blog- link in profile 😀✨
"Face high chapparal on one side, cat claw on the other. The chapparal scratches but does not stab so we lean into it to avoid the cat claw as we push our way down the steep, overgrown trail. We’re both being scratched and grabbed at but it’s worse for Muffy- she’s already covered in scrapes from her fall on the rocks, and now she’s being scratched where she’s already wounded. The trail opens up and then plunges back into chapparal, again and again. We’re going less than 1mph. Below us is Woods canyon, a breathtaking crack in the earth. "Muffy realizes she’s lost her spork. She thinks. Better get a new one just in case. Except there’s nowhere to buy a spork at this hour. All there are are t-shirt shops and evening crystal emporiums where you can pay to have a photo of your aura taken. We walk amongst the tourists in the last of the light, dipping in and out of stores. The air feels magic here. What people want to buy, really, is this magic air. What people want is to go back in time and stop the chain of events that set this all in motion. I palm a spoon at a restaurant for Muffy, hoping to impress her. It works. "I’ll tell you something about me: I go to The Nature to sleep. In towns, insomnia follows me like a stray dog. It has always been this way. In The Nature I sleep. It doesnt even have to be the wildest of natures; any outside will do. In my early twenties I discovered, while strung out on an entire summer of relentless insomnia, that I could sleep in forgotten stands of trees next to the highway while hitchhiking to Alaska. I could sleep in abandoned fields on the edges of industrial neighborhoods. I could sleep on freight trains- a little too well. I’d sleep through the crew change in the town where I wanted to get off, and end up somewhere else. Towns often make me feel like I’m slowly losing my mind but if I can feel the cold night air and see the stars, I can sleep." ✨ Day two from the #MogollonRimTrail is up on my blog. "Tinajas, natural depressions in the rock that fill with rainwater, are my favorite water sources. This one is sprinkled in dead bugs and writhing with mosquito larvae but if you find a clear area and put your gatorade bottle all the way under, so it misses the surface bugs, you’ll end up with water that tastes like the earth but is otherwise perfect." ✨ Day 1 from the #MogollonRimTrail is up on my blog!
