Day 68: Onward!

June 27
Mileage 10
Mile 942 to mile 952

In the morning Gingersnap makes a huge egg scramble and then gives everyone haircuts. While Spark is getting his hair cut Instigate locks a giant padlock onto one of the loops on his pack. Gingersnap had given the lock to instigate the day before.

“Use it wisely,” she’d said, as she pressed the lock into Instigate’s palm.

So the prank war continues.

Spark is furious.

“Where’s the key?” He says. “I’ll cut it off my pack!” He’s stolen Instigate’s trekking poles but then she finds them, on the porch of the house next door. Instigate just laughs. Of course she’s hidden the key in his pack.

Instigate, NoDay and I set out to hitch back to Tuolomne meadows, where we’ll return the trail. The others have other plans, but we will all meet up again, soon enough. The three of us stand in the bright sunshine next to the obscene green of the June grass with our thumbs out and soon we have a ride- a woman named Rochelle, who lives in Lake Tahoe. We tell her we’ll be in Lake Tahoe right after the fourth of July.

“You’ll love it there,” she says. “It’s beautiful.”

She drops us at the Tuolomne meadows store and we shoulder our packs. Our next stop is Bridgeport, 85 miles away. And then we can mail away our bear canisters! We’re at the tail end of the Sierras- we’re almost done with the elevation, the cold nights, the technical trail, the huge passes. We’re so close.

We hike until dusk and then camp on a hillside above a lush meadow with a little stream. The mosquitos are pesky here, but I don’t mind. We make a campfire and sit around it, eating our dinners and watching the light drain from the sky. What are a few mosquitoes? I think, as I swat them. I mean, I’m from Alaska. How bad could it possibly get?
